Biography

Yiming Jia (b. 2006) is a California based composer and clarinetist at Dougherty Valley High School. He studies under Wang Lu and Yiming Wu and has received awards such as National YoungArts Award Winner, ASCAP Morton Gould Finalist, Tribeca Young Composer Competition Honorable Mention, National Young Composers Challenge Finalist, NFMC National Junior Composers Contest 2nd Place Winner, Bay Area Creative Foundation Creative Artist Award, MTNA California Composition Competition Honorable Mention, Robert Avalon International Competition 3rd Place Winner, and Hayes School of Music Composition Competition Winner (Band Division), etc. He also attended the Juilliard Summer Composition Program over the summer of 2024 where he had his piece Chase for a Bygone Memory performed.

He has participated in a variety of events such as All Northern and All State Honor Band in California for both Bb and Eb clarinet. He is also leading the Tri-Valley Youth Music Ensemble, a volunteer music service club that performs in senior centers around the East Bay area. Alongside that, he is an Executive Band Council member at school and manages all the sectionals and other student conductors during pep games.

Outside of classical music, he also likes listening to jazz and electronic music and has created music soundtracks and sound effects for video game projects at the CMU National High School Game Academy program.

Yiming will be studying music composition at Northwestern University and pursuing a dual degree.
